The Rest of the Story

It has been five months since I posted here. I'm very active on Instagram but not here, (obviously). That is about to change as I focus more on my "golden years."

I started this blog in 2013 after a milestone birthday when I was told I was entering my golden years - a time of cutting back, taking life easy, smelling the roses. Somehow the years since then have been as busy as ever and speed by at an alarming rate.

Jay and I have been happily living our dream at our Mill Pond Cottage, the home we built on Lake Sawyer seven years ago. It is the perfect place to grow old but we have one more dream: to move back to Vashon. Thirty five years ago we moved off island and now our plan is to move back, to be near one of our children.

Life is full of cycles. Growing, accumulating, disbursing, letting go. We are ready to let go of this time of our life and move on to the rest of the story.

Yesterday, we almost bought a house on Vashon! So exciting and so close, but no cigar. Getting that close to finding the perfect place makes it extra hard to concentrate today but I am continuing to pack up the Studio and varnish the last pieces completed for a June show. I'll keep you posted as our search continues.

  2. I received an email with a link to your blog. I’m curious what service you used to send the email. I use blogger for my blog and had to use followit to send out to my email subscribers. Thanks

    1. Hello, I'm not sure of the answer. It used to be feed burner. Maybe it still is. I have neglected this blog and am more active on other platforms but now, maybe I'm back and will know the answer to your question soon. Thanks for your comment.

    1. Hello. Once again, I have no idea who you are but thank you for commenting. Actually, I am surprised to hear from anyone. Since changes in Feedburner I don't think I can view who subscribes to this blog. I am encouraged to know I am reaching others who appear to be sharing the same time of life.

  4. Hello Susan. I have been thinking about your comment. Found you on Instagram - love your oil and cold wax work. It really is tricky - before your comment it I didn't know what to call it. Thank you for your inspiration and words to ponder.

  5. I am C'ann Forester, since I will be anonymous when I post. I have followed you since 2012. We took a similar path building our dream home in 2015. Recently we looked into leaving our paradise to be closer to medical facilities and family. We looked at one house which had potential. Although, upon returning home that day we realized this is HOME. Until we can no longer take care of ourselves we are staying. BTW, I love my purchase of the palette garages after your recommendation on Instagram. Good luck with the house hunt and the move. We have traveled to the Islands many times and have a great fondness for the PNW. We live on the Gulf Coast, which is different as night a day.

    1. Hi C'ann. Nice to hear from you. I understand about HOME. This was to be my forever home. We built it with being really old in mind. It has an adu for a caregiver, etc. But, we decided we have time for one more dream. When we move I have a brand new palette garage, still in it's box to look forward to. My best to you. Please keep in touch!

  6. Barbara, I'm so pleased for you that you're following your dream. I hope you find the perfect home in the perfect location. Since I grew up on Bainbridge, I know that living on an Island can be peaceful (or boring), but also bring a sense of community and belonging. I feel that you'll setttle into a new life of creativity and contentment. Good luck and happy house hunting! Love, Ginny

    1. Ginny, thanks so much for your good wishes. Getting so close to making an offer was exciting and a valuable exercise. We have never purchased a home in the traditional way (make an offer on a home for sale) so this is new to us. We looked at 4 candidates and our wants/needs are becoming clearer. XO Barbara

  7. Wow! Barbara that's brave to be moving at this time. However I moved into a Seniors building here on QuadrA Island, BC this January! It's brand new and really wonderful. I'm so lucky to have gotten in here. This little island is very difficult to find rentals so I'm so happy. Love to hear more about your move!

    1. Hello Anonymous, (Is that you, Emma?) Congrats on your new home. Brand new is wonderful isn't it? That's what we will miss about Mill Pond Cottage that we built 7 years ago. It is so beautiful and comfortable. I think I can adjust since I have lived happily in many unique and funky places - our beach house on pilings in Magnolia, Seattle, a VW bus at Neah Bay, the 36 Ford "Elk Express," the chicken coup (Forks), house with no running water in Beaver, a teeny tiny Leschi house, a 1903 Vashon farmhouse we purchased and saved from renter renovation, and on and on. Looking forward to seeing what our next home will be. I'll keep you posted.
